Avocado a day keeps the doctor away!

I'm still juicing although I am eating now as well and I have lost another 1/2 lb!  My day consisted of Carrot, Orange ginger juice this morning, snacks I had some cut up red, yellow and orange mini bell pappers.  Then at lunch I had some chicken and veggie straws.  For super tonight I just had an  Avocado!  I am continuing my dance did the 2000 work out this morning.  I think I may try to change up things with jucing one day then eating the next to keep th goodness flowing.  It feels good to feel light.  So today it's all about the avocado, I never realized just what a power food they really are.  You can add them to salads, pizza's, sandwiches they just brighten it up as well as taste scrumptious!

Calorie count on 1 medium size avocado is 276 calories.

Why you should eat an avocado a day!  The health benefits are so good for us.

Prostate Cancer Prevention
Avocados have been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer.
Oral Cancer Defense
Research has shown that certain compounds in avocados are able to seek out pre-cancerous and cancerous oral cancer cells and destroy them without harming healthy cells.
Breast Cancer Protection
Avocado, like olive oil, is high in oleic acid, which has been shown to prevent breast cancer in numerous studies.
Eye Health
Avocados have more of the carotenoid lutein than any other commonly consumed fruit. Lutein protects against macular degeneration and cataracts, two disabling age-related eye diseases.
Lower Cholesterol
Avocados are high in beta-sitosterol, a compound that has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. In one study, 45 volunteers experienced an average drop in cholesterol of 17% after eating avocados for only one week.
Heart Health
One cup of avocado has 23% of the recommended daily value of folate. Studies show that people who eat diets rich in folate have a much lower incidence of heart disease than those who don't. The vitamin E, monounsaturated fats, and glutathione in avocado are also great for your heart.
Stroke Prevention
The high levels of folate in avocado are also protective against strokes. People who eat diets rich in folate have a much lower risk of stroke than those who don't.
Better Nutrient Absorption
Research has found that certain nutrients are absorbed better when eaten with avocado. In one study, when participants ate a salad containing avocados, they absorbed five times the amount of carotenoids (a group of nutrients that includes lycopene and beta carotene) than those who didn't include avocados.
Glutathione Source
Avocados are an excellent source of glutathione, an important antioxidant that researchers say is important in preventing aging, cancer, and heart disease.
Vitamin E Powerhouse
Avocados are the best fruit source of vitamin E, an essential vitamin that protects against many diseases and helps maintains overall health.

I lost 14.5 pounds in 10 days.....Juicing

WOW can you say WOW?  Jees I have tried diet pills , drinks fads you name it never have I lost this much weight so quickly and feel good.  Understanding this is a life change decision.  You cannot juice for 10 days and think Ok now I am going to eat whatever I want you WILL gain it all back!  I will continue juicing but I will be adding salads and fruits as a meal as well.  I am going to introduce food back to my system slowy with a variety of delcious greens and fruits and nuts.  Today is day 11.  I am starting my day off with a glass of water and lemon and then a glass of carrot and celery juice.  Don't forget you cannot change your way of eating and not exercise as well.  I am not a big fan of exercise and could never stick to a program before, I always had an excuse to quit.  But now with WII Dance it makes it fun and challanging!  Sunday I took off from dancing but I still got my 10000 calorie burn in for the 5 days!  If you are anything like me trust me on this one it is a lot of fun.

My blog is not only to keep me motivated but is is to help educate myself as well as everyone reading why the food choices we make are so good for us or bad.  Each blog will have details on a certain food and what the pros and cons are mostly pros!  Thank you for taking this journey with me and enjoy!

Orange fruit nutrition facts

Delicious and juicy orange fruit contains an impressive list of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals for normal growth and development and overall well-being.
Botanically; orange is the citrus fruit belonging to the family of Rutaceae of the genus; Citrus (which also includes pomelo, tangerine (mandarin orange) and grapefruit). Scientifically the fruit is named as "Citrus sinensis".

Orange is a tropical to semitropical, evergreen, small flowering tree growing to about 5 to 8 m tall and bears seasonal fruits that measure about 3 inches in diameter and weighs about 100-150 g. Oranges are classified into two general categories, sweet and bitter, with the former being the type most commonly consumed. Popular varieties of the sweet orange include Valencia, Navel, Persian variety and blood orange.
Fruits belonging to citrus group are described as “hesperidium”, (A hesperidium is a scientific term to describe the fruit structure belonging to citrus group. In fact, the fruit is a modified berry with tough, leathery rind. Oranage peel contains many volatile oil glands in pits. Interior flesh is composed of segments, called carpels, made up of numerous fluid-filled vesicles that are actually specialized hair cells).

Health benefits of oranges

  • Nutrients in oranges are plentiful and diverse. The fruit is low in calories, contains no saturated fats or cholesterol, but is rich in dietary fiber, pectin, which is very effective in persons with excess body weight. Pectin, by its action as bulk laxative, helps to protect the mucous membrane of the colon by decreasing its exposure time to toxic substances as well as by binding to cancer causing chemicals in the colon. Pectin has also been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels by decreasing its re-absorption in the colon by binding to bile acids in the colon.
  • Oranges, like other citrus fruits, is an excellent source of vitamin C (provides about 60% of DRI); Vitamin C is a powerful natural antioxidant. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps body develop resistance against infectious agents and also, scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals from the blood.
  • Orange fruit contains a variety of phytochemicals. Hesperetin and Narigenin are flavonoids found in citrus fruits. Naringenin is found to have a bio-active effect on human health as antioxidant, free radical scavenger, anti-inflammatory, and immune system modulator. This substance has also been shown to reduce oxidant injury to DNA in vitro studies.
  • Oranges also contain very good levels of vitamin A, and other flavonoid antioxidants such as alpha and beta carotenes, beta-cryptoxanthin, zea-xanthin and lutein. These compounds are known to have antioxidant properties. Vitamin A also required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin and is also essential for vision. Consumption of natural fruits rich in flavonoids helps body to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.
  • It is also a very good source of B-complex vitamins such as thiamin, pyridoxine and folates. These vitamins are essential in the sense that body requires them from external sources to replenish.
  • Orange fruit also contains a very good amount of minerals like potassium and calcium. Potassium in an important component of cell and body fluids helps control heart rate and blood pressure.
Citrus fruits, as such, have long been valued for their wholesome nutritious and antioxidant properties. It is scientifically established that citrus fruits, especially oranges, by virtue of their richness in vitamins and minerals, have many proven health benefits. Moreover, it is now beginning to be appreciated that the other biologically active, non-nutrient compounds found in citrus fruits such as phyto-chemical antioxidants, soluble and insoluble dietary fiber have been found to be helpful in reduction in the risk for cancers, many chronic diseases like arthritis, and from obesity and coronary heart diseases.

Today is day 10 I want Pizza,,,but Instead I have my Papaya....

I am craving pizza because last night I baby sat for my dearest friend and took her two kids to downtown disney for some fun (also figured good way to get in some more excercise with all the walking).   Well, we got as far as T Rex and Lego world before the clouds got really dark and the thunder rolled in.  Oliver (the 3 year old) was so afraid of the thunder so we had to make our getaway.  We stopped at super walmart on the way back for some more veggies this time I picked up some papaya's and collards and some more peaches.  We also ordered a pizza because Oliver said we had to it's his favorite lol.  They totally enjoyed their pizza as I had my juice.  So today is day 10 WOOO HOOO I cannot believe it!  I am starting my day off with some Papaya inspired goodness.

This combination is awesome and so healthy!

1 carrot
1 papaya
1 peach
1 orange
1/2 green apple

Toatla calorie count for this drink is about 269 calories

Good points
Bad points

Papaya health benefits. Apart from the excellent taste and the digestive enzymes, the benefits of papaya fruit are many. Papayas are bright yellow or orange in color and therefore are rich sources of beta carotene. They are also rich in vitamin C, folates, vitamin B, and flavonoids. There are many minerals in the fruit as well. In addition to soluble fiber, papaya also contains potassium, magnesium, and pantothenic acid. This amalgamation of nutrients helps in improving cardiovascular health and can also help prevent cancers. The enzyme papain could be used to treat sports injuries and is also beneficial in case of trauma and allergies. Papaya fruit benefits come from all the various nutrients that the fruit contains. The fruit is low in sugar and therefore is excellent for diabetics as well. Regular consumption of papaya can help in the prevention of diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Papayas contain a high concentration of provitamin A carotenoid phytonutrients. These are very powerful antioxidants and are very good source of vitamins A, C, and E. All these vitamins act as antioxidants in the body and are able to get rid of free radicals to prevent cancer. The antioxidants also prevent the oxidation of cholesterol. This is important because if the cholesterol becomes oxidized, it may begin to stick to the walls of arteries, making them smaller and causing hypertension. Cholesterol can form plaques in the blood vessels causing blood clots to form or forming arterial blockages themselves. The fiber present in papayas can help bind the toxins that cause cancer. In the colon, these toxins help in keeping the cancer causing toxins at bay. The other nutrients contained in papaya are also known to reduce the risk of cancers, especially that of colon cancer.

Papaya juice benefits can also not be ignored. Papaya juice has many anti-inflammatory properties due to its enzymes papain and chymopapain. Both these enzymes can together lower inflammation in the body. For a person healing from burns, papaya can be an excellent remedy for fast recovery. Apart from the cosmetic papaya skin benefits, the juice of the fruit can also help in healing of flesh wounds. The antioxidants, vitamins A, C and E, together act as anti-inflammatory agents. These are good at reducing both external and internal inflammation. In diseases which are worsened due to inflammation, like asthma, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis, the papaya fruit can be really beneficial. If you are wondering what is papaya good for, the answer is everything. Papaya can be an excellent ‘sick food’. This means that the nutrients present in papaya can speed up convalescence in sick patients. People with inflammatory diseases can actually be aided in their treatment by consuming papayas. The vitamin A rich papaya can also help you avoid the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.

The benefits of papaya juice and the benefits of papaya leaf extract are similar. Among the many benefits for the health and skin, papaya’s nutrients can also boost immunity. Both vitamins C and A, which are found in abundance in papayas, are excellent for the body’s immune system. Together, these nutrients can help prevent illnesses such as cold, flu, and other recurrent infections. As we age, macular degeneration is one of the side effects that many experience. Macular degeneration is a natural degenerative disease that can be prevented by consuming at least three servings of papaya every day. The antioxidants, vitamins A, C and E, are strongly related to the prevention of vision loss and therefore are excellent when it comes to having good vision. The benefits of papaya seeds are also similar because they have similar concentrations of the nutrients that the fruit and the papaya plant contain. However, papaya seeds are considered healthier than the fruit itself because of the high bio availability of the nutrients.

It is known that papaya extract is excellent for the skin. The benefits of papaya for the skin can be utilized in the form of papaya soap. Papaya soaps are made from the extracts of the papaya fruit. The vitamins A, C and E in the papaya soap help in improving the overall texture and tone of the skin. In particular, vitamins A and E help in repairing and rebuilding tissues, whereas vitamin C helps in improving overall skin texture and complexion. Bathing with papaya soap, which contains natural extracts of the fruit, can help make your skin appear more youthful and beautiful. Papaya enzyme benefits for the skin are also similar. These enzymes help the dead skin slough off naturally, revealing beautiful, younger skin underneath.

I wasn't to sure about the seeds but look what I found out (just alittle to late because I through them away next time I will keep them)

Not only are papaya seeds edible, but they are also good for you. Here are four health benefits of papaya seeds.
Antibacterial Properties
Research has found that papaya seeds are effective against E. coli, Salmonella, and Staph infections.
Kidney Protection
Research has found that papaya seed extract may protect the kidneys from toxin-induced kidney failure.
Eliminates Intestinal Parasites
There is evidence that papaya seeds eradicate intestinal parasites. In a study done on Nigerian children with intestinal parasites, 76.7% of the children were parasite-free after seven days of treatment with papaya seeds compared to only 16.7% of the children who received a placebo.
Liver Detoxifier
In Chinese medicine, it is believed that a teaspoon of papaya seeds will help detoxify the liver. Papaya seeds are often recommended by natural doctors in the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver

I did not weight myself today because my scale broke lmao ha ha so until I get another scale I will not know!  But I feel amazing and I will keep going for another 5 days!

Day 9 Holy Tomatoe I made it......

This screen shot above is of my Lets Dance Intense workout I do everyday!  The number 7876 is the calorie burn I did since thursday.  As you can see I am actually doing more then 2000 a day woo hoo.  I am feeling so much better my energy level is higher then its been in years and I am not starving!  I have lost another 2 lbs total weight loss now is 13 lbs in 9 days!!  Can you say motivated??  Jees I never thought I could lose this much weight in so little time and feel so good without starving myself.  YES I do get very tempted to eat food and I am wanting alot of things like bread and cheese but I don't need it and my will power is stronger then ever to say "No thank you".

Tomorrow will be my 10th day and I think I will continue juicing for another 5 days since I got this far I figure let me take baby steps and keep going.  I think if I keep it up I will train my body and mind to change my lifestyle so I can continue a healthier way a living from now on.  I will be 50 in 3 years and I want to be the healthiest I have ever been that is my goal.  So this will be a long journey that I am will to take on the challange for ME.

Today I have made myself a Bloody Mary Twist:
I didnt have any fresh tomatoes so I had to cheat alittle I used a can of peeled whole plum tomatoes and added parsley, basil and lemon.

Total calorie count is about 210 calories

1 can whole plum tomatoes - ( I used tutorusso)
1 lemon
1/4 cup of basil
1 sprig of parsley

Now later you can always add some ground pepper and hot peppers but I didnt want to go over board lol.  Shot of Vodka and now we are talking lol Maybe another time ha ha ha.

The amazing health benefits of the tomatoes:

Tomatoes, which are actually a fruit and not a vegetable, are loaded with all kinds of health benefits for the body. They are in fact, a highly versatile health product and due to their equally versatile preparation options, there's really no reason to neglect the tomato as part of a healthy diet.

One of the most well known tomato eating benefit is its' Lycopene content. Lycopene is a vital anti-oxidant that helps in the fight against cancerous cell formation as well as other kinds of health complications and diseases.

Free radicals in the body can be flushed out with high levels of Lycopene, and the tomato is so amply loaded with this vital anti-oxidant that it actually derives its rich redness from the nutrient.

Lycopene is not a naturally produced element within the body and the human body requires sources of Lycopene in order to make use of this powerful anti-oxidant. While other fruits and vegetables do contain this necessary health ingredient, no other fruit or vegetable has the high concentration of Lycopene that the tomato takes pride in.

Studies involving the tomato have cropped up all over the world of medical science. There are more health benefits derived from eating a tomato than the scientific community is able to print, at least yet.

These studies have proven not only the benefits in preventing cancer, heart disease as well as high cholesterol are also in the tomato's sights.

This is really exciting information. The health benefits of tomatoes are becoming more and more documented every day as we learn new uses of this amazing fruit.

Cancers such as prostate cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, and cancers of the stomach, mouth, pharynx, and esophagus have all been proven to be staved off by high levels of Lycopene.

Researchers introduced Lycopene into pre-existing cancer cellcultures and the Lycopene prevented the continued growth of these cultures. This is pretty powerful evidence that the health benefits of eating a tomato are really quite phenomenal.

It takes as little as 540 milliliters of liquid tomato product to get the full benefits of Lycopene. This means that a daily glass of tomato juice has the potential to keep a person healthy for life.

Tomatoes are equally as nutritious fresh as they are in other variable forms. When tomato products are heat processed the bioavailablity of the Lycopene actually increases rather than the anticipated decrease.

Even with all the plentiful research that has gone into the health benefits of tomatoes, there is still more research being conducted as the medical science community understands that we have not fully tapped into the potential presented by a tomato just yet.

Research is now slowly proving that there is a high likelihood that the consumption of tomatoes and tomato based products actually may prevent serum lipid oxidation and reduce the risk of macular degenerative disease.

Tomatoes are by far the healthiest of the fruits and vegetables with the power to ward off some of the worst known diseases to man. With the vast variety of tomato products on the market, it really shouldn't be difficult to get the full health benefit of tomatoes but, if you would like to get the full health benefits of tomatoes and have some fun at the same time, consider raising your own organic tomatoes. It would be a lot of fun, get you outside for some vitamin D and best of all reward you with great taste and vibrant health.

Juicing has been a lifesaver for me and anyone interested in starting should seek a doctor’s advice before doing so although I haven’t it is a wise choice to make sure you are healthy enough to take on the challenge.

Another important factor is making sure your fruits and vegetables are clean and fresh and preferably organic.  By using more cucumbers and celery and other high water content vegetables and fruit you can make more juice on a lower budget.  Be sure to juice the leafy vegetables first so that when you juice the cucumbers it will push out the goodness from your juicer.

Having a support system is also crucial.  I know I couldn’t have done this on my own.  My daughter and cousin and husband have been very supportive as well as many people I have met through Facebook and here.  You need that support to keep going!

Please comment would love to know your thoughts.

Next time I will try green tomatoes!! Off to my Island paradise with my Bloody Mary in hand and the sunshine on my face.

Still juicing - Day 7 down 11.5 lbs

Day 6 came and went I couldnt get on to post my blog so this will be day 6 & 7!  On day 6 I woke up and I had so much on my mind I forgot to weigh myself.  I then made my morning carrot juice and then started to prepare my lunch and dinner juice when i got about a quart of juice my juicer died!... I was so worried I couldnt juice again lol but I had to visit with Mom and Dad so i couldnt worry about it on day six.  Went to my sisters and had my green juice in the afternoon then at supper time when they put all the food out I only had sliced reb peppers and few slices of tomatoes.  Still feeling great!  I'm not sure how many calories I am taking in but I hope it is enough.  I do not feel like I am starving.

Day 7 today!  I woke up three time in the middle of the night with my back pain from my OA.  I also broke out in hives.  Now don't think this is from juicing because it is not lol My cousin is staying with us and has a small dog.  I am allergic to animals.  When we left to go to my sisters on day six we put him in my bathroom (because it big to give him enough room to move around) well.... The little sucker managed to open my bathroom sliding door and was out and in my bedroom.  So, I'm thinking he must of gotton on my bed. Todays mission steam clean all the floors and beds and disinfect my house lol.

So everyone ready for this I lost another 2 lbs I am now down a total of 11.5 lbs in 7 days!!!

My juicer is working again I guess the motor needed to reset itself lol.

Ok so here is what I had put together:

1 bunch of spinach
2 stalks of bok choy
1 cup of broccoli
5 Strawberries
1 lemon

Benefits of Bok Choy:

The tasty, mild plant known as bok choy is a great option if you are looking to add fresh produce to your diet in order to promote a weight loss or fitness meal plan. This vegetable has a lot of positive health effects, and provides a great alternative to lettuce or other kinds of cabbages. Bok Choy is sometimes called “Chinese white cabbage.” It comes in tightly packed heads with white and green coloration. It’s popular in stir fries and similar hot dishes. Use this exotic plant food, and you’ll find its crispness compliments a lot of the healthy cuisine that gives you the best chance of slimming down through good diet choices.

Health Benefits of Bok Choy

Here are some of the major health benefits that bok choy provides in a diet plan.

1. Calories

Bok Choy is a low-calorie food. As a green vegetable, it doesn’t contain a lot of the fats and sugars that push calorie counts through the roof. That makes it a good way to bulk up a meal without adding a lot of calories to your plate.

2. Carbs

When it comes to carbohydrates, or carbs, it’s really hard to keep this element of your diet under control.  You can lower your calorie count, cut out red meats, and avoid cheeses and fatty foods, but those carbs still creep in. After all, carbs are in almost everything, right?
Bok Choy is one of a few select foods that has a low carb value, making it a prime candidate for a low-carb diet. However, nutritional advice on carbs varies. Ask your doctor about how to get your carb levels right with a daily menu.

3. Antioxidants

The general category of vitamins called antioxidants help to ward off a wide range of diseases. Antioxidants help to prevent some kinds of cancers. They also protect the heart against some kinds of illness. Basically, these elements help the body fight off illness and pack a powerful health punch.  Bok choy is high in antioxidants and will that’s another reason why it can be so helpful to add this plant to your dinners.

4. Vitamin C

Another vitamin that bok choy has is vitamin C. This vitamin, also found in citrus fruits, helps to prevent you from getting health conditions like scurvy, where a deficiency leads to skin problems and other illnesses.

5. Folic Acid

Bok choy is a source of folic acid, which is something pregnant women generally need in their diets. Talk to your doctor about a specific diet plan if you are pregnant or nursing, and ask about all of the risks and benefits of foods including bok choy for a specialized maternity menu.

6. Potassium

Potassium is another thing that your body needs in specific levels. Bok choy can deliver this nutritional element as well, although again, you should talk to your doctor about how much potassium you need depending on current medical conditions or medications that you are taking.
All of the above are great reasons to include bok choy in your diet. Get this and other green plants into your meals, and you’ll be following the time-tested strategy of eating better to feel better, promote longevity, and generally keep yourself healthy and happy.

My power food today in my juicing is the CARROT!

Apart from that, carrots are also good sources of vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin K, biotin, fiber, potassium and thiamine. Here are 7 health benefits of carrots for human body:
  1. Prevent Cancer
Many studies shown that eating carrots may help lower the risk of breast cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer. Recently, researchers have isolated a compound called falcarinol in carrots that may be largely responsible for anti-cancer benefits. Falcarinol is a natural pesticide found in carrots that protects roots from fungal diseases. In daily diet, carrots are almost the only source of these compounds. A study conducted on mice found that they were fed with either raw carrots or falcarinol have one-third lower risk of developing colon cancer than mice not fed by them.
  2. Improve Vision
The retina of the eye needs vitamin A to function, lack of vitamin A causes night blindness. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, a substance which converted into vitamin A in the liver. In the retina, vitamin A is transformed into rhodopsin, a purple pigment that necessary for night vision. In addition, beta-carotene help protect against macular degeneration and the development of senile cataracts. A study found that people who eat most Beta-carotene had 40 percent lower risk of macular degeneration than those who consumed little.
  3. Prevent heart disease
Studies shown that a diet high in carotenoids are associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Also, it is believed that regular consumption of carrots reduces cholesterol levels. Soluble fiber in carrots can help lower blood cholesterol levels by binding with and removing bile acids, cholesterol triggers would be pulled out from the bloodstream to make more bile acids.
