Oranges have been America's favorite first (Health Food).  Well recognized as a potent source of Vitamin C.  No one gets excited about an orange in their lunch box...but they should!

The discoveries show how the power of the orange helps to support heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke and a host of chronic ailments.

The beautiful round colorful fruit are high in vitamin C and recent studies have demonstrated that oranges can play a significant role in preventing cancer.  The Mediterraniean diet consists of consideral amounts of citrus, and is associated with a low incidents of cancersof the breast, lung, pancreas, colon, rectum and cervix! Oranges (citrus fruits) have been found to contain many known anticancer agents, possibly more than any other food.

Remember, vitamin C is rapidly excreted from the body.  Adequate daily intake is critical for optimum health.

There has been a dcline over the past 20 years in the intake of vitamin c mostly for unknown reasons.  One possibility is that many consumers have switched from concentrated orange juice to ready to drink orange juices and orange drinks.  As orange juice is the primary source of vitamin c in our diet, and the frozen form of orange juiceis considerably higher in vitamin c then the ready to drink kinds.  This switch can be having a dramtic effect on our overall health.

The consentration of vitamin C in orange pulp is twice that found in the peel and ten times that found in the juice.  Bottom line: Eat more pulp and buy high pulp juice.

Oranges in the kitchen:  Citrus fruit along with cherries, grapes, and ten other fruits wont ripen after picked.   And a bright orange color doesnt nessessarily mean its ripe.  Oranges are routinely gassed and dyeed for cosmetic reasons.  Spotches of green on an orange is nothing to worry about.

The heavier and smaller the fruit and usually thinner skin, the more juiceit contains. You will also get more juice out of lemon or orange if you let it reach room temperature before juicing.  Wholr oranges can be stored in fridge up to two weeks or on at room tempoerature.

Tip: Once oranges are juiced they start to lose their vitamin c.  One way to revitalize your C content in the orange juice is to squeeze a lemon into the carton.
